When you first meet an autistic child, your first impression will likely be that this is one shy kid. Only after you have spent a short while trying to reach out will you eventually begin to understand that all your advances that continue being shelved to the side are not out of shyness, but something else. Of course, you begin to feel apologetic about having been mad at the child in the first place, and you begin to try to make amends. Sorry, the child will only treat you the same way again. There s just no getting to an autism patient; there s only adjusting to them, and not them to you.
Autistic children are stereotypical in their warped nature, and they tend to be unable to break from a tie to repetitious language, saying the same thing over and over again, yet sometimes meaning different things. You will find one of them seated all alone holding a toy in their hands and doing nothing but staring and rocking back and forth. It is rather distressing and frustrating, but it s what you will have to live with if your child suffers.
If you ask me, I still firmly believe that there is a purpose to everything even if we cannot find or recognize that purpose. That is why no matter how difficult of painful something is for me I look ahead to a brighter day when the same experience will make me a better person. That is why I don’t often cry when I see my autistic little boy, all tied up and lost in his own world. I know there is a purpose to it, I just don’t know that purpose. But rather than cry, I will wait and do what my doctor advises, until my little boy can find his way back to me.
When your child is autistic, they can be very intense about things around them. Sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and even touch. To begin with, you don’t want to be suddenly around them with some of these things, and even when you do, you may have to wait long minutes for the right moment. Anything short of this could drive the child literarily berserk. Trust me, you are not spoiling the child this way, you are only seeing to your own peace of mind.
