Skateboarding is a lot of fun. Its become so popular that is has evolved from something just for teens to a full-blown sport for adults, too. If you’re good enough, you can make good money at it – just ask Tony Hawk. But it’s really cool because just about anyone can learn skateboarding. It will take a lot of time and practice before you can skate like a pro – so that’s the bad news. You can do it if you want, but you know it takes a lot of practice, dedication, and hard work. Here are a few great suggestions to help you on your way.
First – get the right gear! I know – it’s a blow to the coolness to wear shin guards, elbow/knee pads, and the helmut. But – when you first start out, it won’t take long to thank yourself for wearing them. Just like riding a bike, you are going to fall off more than you are going to go forward–especially if you’ve never tried to skateboard before. Learning how to stop yourself will be the one thing that may produce more bruises and scrapes for you. In time, you may decide to lose some of the protective gear. But it’s still a great idea to keep the helmut on. You only have one brain. So it’s best to protect it should you ever seriously fall off. Try wearing just one of a pair of new clip on sunglasses to be stylish as you are boarding.
It’s a good idea to begin with a board that’s not expensive but it’s sturdy. But you can find totally tricked and high quality boards, but be prepared to pay a lot for them. They’re so pricey you won’t want to get them dirty! That’s the reasoning behind getting a cheaper board for beginner’s. You’ll find them to be thicker and with sturdy wheels. They aren’t fancy but they are durable and will be able to stand up to the beating that beginning skateboarders usually give them. You’ll find a more supportive board for beginners to be ABEC skateboards.
You’ll need to learn the skaters lingo, and it’s good to find out the different kinds of skateboards used. You’ll find lots of different kinds of boards, they’re not all identical. It’s good to discover the differences and why they exist. It’s good to be able to understand the skaters vocabulary. That way you can talk to anyone about problems and get help.
You know there’s more to skating than standing and riding a flat piece of board. You’ll see many people commuting to work on skateboards in cities, and they’re just fun to ride. Have an open mind to learning, and that will be the trick that will make you better.
